Microstructures of epidote-prehnite bearing damaged granitoids (northern Victoria Land, Antarctica): clues for the interaction between faulting and hydrothermal fluids

چکیده

Exhumed faults in granitoids along the Lanterman Fault-Rennick Graben Fault system (northern Victoria Land, Antarctica) show superposed ductile to brittle deformation and pervasive hydrothermal fluid-rock interaction. These processes triggered multiple slip events producing crosscutting epidote prehnite-rich fault veins, ultracataclasites pseudotachylytes of crushing origin. Combined microstructural minerochemical investigations on damage zones three types alteration: (i) albitization K-feldspar Ca-plagioclase; (ii) crystallization prehnite calcite veins; (iii) alteration magmatic phases by secondary hydrous minerals (e.g. chlorite, white mica, prehnite). The experienced various episodes strain weakening hardening, due precipitation within ultracataclastic intervals, at decreasing temperature conditions (200 < T°C 450) varying CO2 fugacity fluids. Cyclic epidote/prehnite cores caused cementation locking faults, concentration weaker horizons a progressive broadening zone. Our results indicate that co-seismic syntectonic fluid flow very likely occurred prior Cenozoic reactivation inherited anisotropies northern Land crust underlines its high potential for polyphasicity.

Co-variation in soil biodiversity and biogeochemistry in northern and southern Victoria Land, Antarctica

Data from six sites in Victoria Land (72–77oS) investigating co-variation in soil communities (microbial and invertebrate) with biogeochemical properties showthe influence of soil properties on habitat suitability varied among local landscapes as well as across climate gradients. Species richness of metazoan invertebrates (Nematoda, Tardigrada and Rotifera) was similar to previous descriptions ...

Ecological Biogeography of the Terrestrial Nematodes of Victoria Land, Antarctica

The terrestrial ecosystems of Victoria Land, Antarctica are characteristically simple in terms of biological diversity and ecological functioning. Nematodes are the most commonly encountered and abundant metazoans of Victoria Land soils, yet little is known of their diversity and distribution. Herein we present a summary of the geographic distribution, habitats and ecology of the terrestrial ne...

Highly Heterogeneous Soil Bacterial Communities around Terra Nova Bay of Northern Victoria Land, Antarctica

Given the diminished role of biotic interactions in soils of continental Antarctica, abiotic factors are believed to play a dominant role in structuring of microbial communities. However, many ice-free regions remain unexplored, and it is unclear which environmental gradients are primarily responsible for the variations among bacterial communities. In this study, we investigated the soil bacter...

Chronostratigraphy of the CRP-3 Drillhole, Victoria Land Basin, Antarctica

An 823 m thick glaciomarine Cenozoic section sitting unconformably on the Lower Devonian Beacon Supergroup was recovered in CRP –3. This paper reviews the chronostratigraphical constraints for the Cenozoic section. Between 3 and 480.27 mbsf 23 unconformity bounded cycles of sediment were recorded. Each unconformity is thought to represent a hiatus of uncertain duration. Four magnetozones have b...
